Getting to know Orion

Learn a practical way to recognize Orion and explore its stars in the map.

Open the sky map

Start with a recognizable pattern

Orion is known for its three belt stars. A constellation is an apparent pattern and a defined region of the sky; its stars need not be close to one another in space.

Use the map to explore

Enable constellation lines, choose your location, and search for Betelgeuse or Rigel. These provide useful starting points for exploring Orion. Depending on your latitude, time, and season, the pattern may be low, tilted, or below the horizon.

Go beyond the outline

Search for the Orion Nebula and enable deep-sky objects. Orion marks its location. The marker is not a photograph and does not predict the amount of detail you can see with your equipment.

Put this guide into practice

Check tonight’s planets, twilight times and local sky reports, then choose a target for your observing time.
