GUIDES

Plan an evening of stargazing

Choose a place, compare observing times, and pick a manageable first target.

Open the sky map

Start with your actual location

Use current location or search for your observing city. A detected place label names a nearby town or district, while the sky calculations still use your GPS coordinates. Check the time zone before planning ahead.

Compare a few times

Open Tonight from the map for a short target list. Select a target to view its altitude, direction, and next rise and set. Use the date and time control to compare its position later in the evening.

Keep the first session simple

Choose one or two bright targets and find an open view in their direction. Check actual weather and local obstructions. Orion’s visibility labels describe the mathematical horizon and do not account for clouds or buildings.

Return to the present

When you step outside, tap Live. A planning date stays selected until you change it, so matching the time is as important as matching the location.

Put this guide into practice

Check tonight’s planets, twilight times and local sky reports, then choose a target for your observing time.
